Holiday Fashion Mistakes To Avoid

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

It is the season to be jolly but the Holidays can also turn into a season of woe especially if you get caught in a fashion disaster. Preparing for this “challenging” season is always the best way to remain glam and fab but the truth is, not everyone has the luxury of time and money. Fear not, though. Arm yourself with these basic fashion mistakes to avoid and you’ll be fashionably safe for the season.

1. Too much glitz. It’s the Holidays so wear something shiny, right? Well, not all the time. If you are starting to shine brighter than your Christmas tree, then that should be a warning sign. But it’s not just the obvious that you want to avoid. For example, if you are on the busty side, wearing a glitzy sweater may not be an appropriate choice. Now, we are not saying you should stay away from glitz. But sometimes, the best sparkle comes in small forms like a beaded clutch, a sparkly pair of ankle boots or a hint of glittery eye shadow.

2. Too much skin. Remember, the goal is always to look sexy, not sleazy. Unfortunately, there is a fine line between this two and it is a line that is often transgressed. There is nothing wrong with accentuating your assets but the key is always to do it with taste. For example, a lace-trimmed camisole under a blazer hints at great cleavage, a halter dress can be a sexy and decent way to show off toned arms while a pair of sexy ankle boots paired with a skirt can showcase your lovely legs.

3. Too vague. Dress codes can be tricky. When does it become cocktail? What exactly is dressy casual? Can you wear ankle boots to a cocktail party if you are wearing a cocktail dress? What sort of women’s shoes should you wear to a dressy casual event? You are not alone in deciphering these tricky dress codes. The best way to approach a situation like this is to wear something that spans codes and categories like a little black dress.

Celebrity Holiday Fashion Tips (Part 2)

Saturday, December 3rd, 2011

As promised, here’s the second part of our special Holiday edition of celebrity style tips. In part one of our feature, we shared unsolicited style wisdom from Zoe Saldana, Katie Homes and Kirsten Dunst.

Before you start buying all those wedge boots, ankle boots and women’s dresses, read on so you can maximize your shopping budget for the real wardrobe essentials this Holiday season.

1. Emma Stone. Looking sexy does not always mean exposing skin. Sometimes, looking sexy also means looking classy and well put together. Take this look from Emma Stone for example. She’s wearing a very professional looking pencil skirt and blouse combination. It’s a great outfit for work and for after work. If wearing heels becomes too painful, you can always bring an extra pair of wedge shoes (not the wedge boots for this one though).

2. Rachel Bilson. If you don’t want to look like a “girly girl” this Holidays, take a style page from this pint-sized beauty. Grab a pair of slightly oversized boyfriend jeans, pair it with a fitted jacket (it doesn’t have to be metallic like the one she’s wearing) and finish off with a hat. Hats are overlooked fashion accessories you can take advantage of this season so go ahead and get one! For this outfit, you may now bring out your wedge boots. High heels are more than okay too.

3. Reese Witherspoon. While the Holidays are all about fun and letting loose, you can still adapt a sleeker look for your hair this season. Don’t worry, you’re not alone. Just look at hot mama Reese Witherspoon who looks sleek and sexy in her top knot. It’s also a great look for women who don’t have time to wash their hair before a party (though we highly recommend allotting hair time before a fun night). Of course, if you are wearing your hair up, you got to keep it consistent by wearing something just as sleek like this body hugging little black dress.

Celebrity Holiday Fashion Tips

Friday, December 2nd, 2011

Just because you don’t have a stylist, it doesn’t mean that you can’t rock it like your favorite Hollywood A-lister. With online fashion stores like Make Me Chic, fashion is so accessible and looking drab is never an option. Whether it’s a hot pair of sexy ankle boots or a body hugging leather dress, you can always find a more budget-friendly alternative to your fashion wish list.

Today, we are borrowing Holiday style tips from the A-listers themselves. Read on, ladies, and find out how you can be your own fashion star this Holiday season.

1. Zoe Saldana. One sure fire way to stand out in a party (for the right reasons) is to go bold. And by bold we mean make bold fashion choices. Take it from Ms. Saldana who’s looking fierce in a yellow fitted dress. A simple pair of high-heeled sandals finish off the look. Just remember that if you want to go colorful, make sure everything looks coordinated.

2. Katie Holmes. Mrs. Cruise may have had her misunderstandings with the fashion police in the past but in this picture, she sure is looking slick and glam. The blazer and silk shirt combination is certified classic. This is a great dress down office outfit. If you are headed to a party afterwards, you can replace the skinny jeans with a black skirt, black tights and a pair of ankle boots if you are feeling a bit more fun and playful. You can also go for a pair of statement heels.

3. Kirsten Dunst. Trust the Melancholia star to make a fashion forward statement as the Holiday season approaches. If you have the body and the self-confidence to do it, go for leather! You don’t have to jump into this trend by wearing leather from head to toe, you can ease into it by wearing sexy leather shorts or a skirt. Add spunk to it by finishing off with a pair of leather ankle boots. It’s unconventional, it’s fun, it’s fashion forward and it’s sure to make you stand out for all the right reasons.

We’re not yet done dishing out the Holiday style tips so come back for the second part of this article!
