Keeping It Knitted

Thursday, November 17th, 2011

Of all good things Fall, one of my favorite pieces of women’s fashion clothing I reach for when the temperature starts to drop, is anything knitted. I’m not talking about those small grooves and crevices in the sweaters and shirts of Christmas past. I’m talking about the thick rich knitted wool on sweaters that sit nice and loose on your frame and give you all the warmth you need to fight the cold. But not all knitted sweaters were made equal- no. Of all the colors of the rainbow, I choose you, gray.

Now to some, choosing gray as the shade of choice might seem strange. But if you look at the trends that keep cycling back and forth with women’s fashion clothing, you’ll see an increase in the pairing of gray with a pop of color that will forever keep its presence alive no matter what the season.

One of my favorite ways to wear a gray knitted sweater is with an unlikely piece of clothing to complement it: a romper. A romper? Yes. Just like in the photograph, you take a summer cool romper in a tropical shade or jewel-toned if you want to be more season-friendly, and you simply put on a gray sweater over it to create the contrasted look as if you’re wearing a sweater and shorts. When we think of knitted sweaters, we naturally associate them with anything boot-related. Knitted sweaters are one of the major signals that the holiday season is approaching. So throwing off the typical trend to create your own look with the comfort of wearing the sweater over a romper is quite effortless. (more…)

Shopping Safari Kors’ Style!

Thursday, November 3rd, 2011

As clear as day, we can see that Michael Kors women’s fashion clothing was definitely channeling a safari trip to Africa in his collection that debuted for his Spring 2012 ready to wear line. In a surprising turn of events, Michael Kors strayed from his usual straight lines and solid classy cuts to a more urban dubbed “Afriluxe” collection that gave us a breath of air and made his mark on the runways of New York by straying from the bold colors of the trends saturating our fashion world and settling into his own marked collection for a season to remember!

Keeping in mind all the simple designs and lines of women’s fashion clothing today, Michael Kors kept things in order while adding his own flair in one of my favorite numbers in the creation of his animal print patch-work shift. Taking the essentials of all the animal print that’s been roaring into the streets, and lacing them together in true Kors’ style, Michael did a beautiful job making bold prints somehow work together in zig zagged shapes and ultimately create smooth clean lines. But to add his signature look, Michael Kors did a gorgeous pairing with a pair of utilitarian women’s gladiator sandals.

I never get tired of seeing a fabulous pair of women’s sandals and when they are women’s gladiator sandals, it makes me squeal! Of all the women’s sandals out there, gladiator sandals are going to stick around for ages. Whether it’s the sandals that are laced or buckled all the way up your calves, or if they’re at the ankle, Michael Kors has the collection of dresses and sheaths to accompany them in a casual contemporary safari style that’s set for the streets or for the runways.

The beauty of Michael Kors’ collections is its ability to really transcend the runway and make its way into our wardrobes. Whether it’s animal print patchwork on a dress or a pair of gladiator sandals, we cannot deny his presence in our choices from time to time. Especially in recent days, we see the presence of orange being a big hit in the fashion world. In a number that echoes the presence of last season’s big collection, Michael Kors designed a gorgeous three-piece set that’s set all in a tangerine orange and a neutral brown belt that’s elegantly draped at the waistline.

With such a simple mono-chrome outfit such as this, the best way to create a contrast without taking away from the simplicity of the tones, is to pair it with a pair of flat gladiator sandals that give the soft look a bit of edge. Given the simple but sweet combinations that America’s most beloved designer has handed us for the spring, we can’t say that we don’t have any inspiration for the upcoming season. How can we deny some Kors in our lives?

Chris Benz for Bold and Brazen Fashion!

Wednesday, October 19th, 2011

Chris Benz has been a growing figure in the New York fashion industry and with the unvieling of his Spring 2012 Ready to Wear women’s clothing line, we can see why he is applauded as being one of fashion’s rebels who doesn’t give a hoot about going off in his own direction despite the tides of other major labels.

In a twist of 70’s housewife gone awry, Chris Benz brings us a fresh taste of colors and patterns uniting and clashing simultaneously in his Spring collection of women’s clothing that we can all take notes on. Think of your moden day real housewife of [insert your city]. We can think of all the long women’s dresses, pencil skirts and capris that roam about the cul de sacs and cross streets. But let’s reinvent what that might look like and unfasten the limit of age these styles of dresses can cross by opening our arms to embrace Benz’s fashion senses.

Take your typical women’s dress with the tie at the side and the zipper in the back, in all your solid prints and take a step forward fashion-wise and consider bold patterns in geometric figures splashed with hints of bright jewel-tone colors all over to create a fashion-forward woman who can wear this dress at the house, in the office or at the mall while you’re perusing through stores with your friends. Yes, it’s a new aged way to look at the shift dress as a means to fit both function and fashion wherever you go. But moreso than the women’s clothing, my eyes tend to gravitate more towards the floor.

I couldn’t help but notice the alternate route Chris Benz took to the sandals he paired up with his dresses and skirt suit detaield duos. With a shift dress, we typically see a pair of pointy-toe high heeled shoes or just a pair of high heeled pumps. But Benz brought the brazen with a pair of strappy white sandals that could be worn in the Hamptons and to work.

But if women’s sandals aren’t your favorite pair of shoes to slip on when wearing something as feminine as a dress, then try a pair of evening shoes as it will still be a quiet piece next to the loud splash his clothing now gives. I will forever and always encourage a fashionista at any age to step outside the boundaries that normally bind us into the same style of clothing we wear year after year. Chris Benz’s collection shows us that we can still be edgy and live gloriously in fashion that’s comforting but new with a bold patterned dress but still keep things traditional to balance it out even when slipping into a pair of shiny evening shoes.

Oscar’s Fresh Spring Picks!

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

After 40+ years in the fashion industry, Oscar de la Renta is still one of my top 3 designers I eagerly await to unveil his collection for each runway show. With stars like fellow designer Valentino, Justin Timberlake, and Nikki Minaj sitting front row, Oscar matched the eclectic mix of celebrities in his crowd with an upbeat soundtrack to Pink Floyd and Led Zeppelin as his top tier models strutted down the narrow runway to give the audience, both in person and us what we’ve been waiting to see for this Spring!

Although we’re used to seeing Oscar’s sleeveless women’s dresses and tweed skirt suits, he did not disappoint us by breathing in some fresh air and taking us on a detour into a world of silk taffeta ball gowns in this glorious green color and as all runway shows have signaled to us, how white is the must-have, Oscar de la Renta stayed true to his reign as one of the most detailed and delicate designers of women’s dresses with an array of white lace and meticulously sewn dresses with all the right shoes to match.

I can rave on and on about the beauty of Oscar’s gowns but I think we can all agree that the collections he churns out year after year do not even come close to disappointing. In fact, I anticipate his direction every season to see how I can incorporate his vision into a wardrobe of my own. Unfortunately, I cannot go out and purchase his collection off the runway, but what we can do, is take what he has shown us and create something unique for ourselves!

When Oscar debuted his collection of white lace detailed dresses, I was excited to see that he paired such a petite and feminine dress with a pair of black women’s sandals that were strappy and adorned with buckles. It’s a typical look to put white lace with nude pumps, but Oscar does not roll with the tide. So try that for yourself too! Try a pair of sassy women’s sandals with something delicate looking to even out the textures and play with your looks.

But the look I adored the most has to be the splash of color and the in-your-face texture of Oscar’s silk taffeta ball gowns in bright hues to awaken your senses and bring you back to life! I especially love how he took such a formal attire and played it up with colors and balanced it out with casual lace designs on top and finishes with what else: flats! But not just any flats, but a pair of golden glittery flats! How fun! This gives us a reason to shuffle through our shoe collections or begin shopping away as fashion and funk come hand in hand with the elegance and innovative fashion that Oscar de la Renta continues to bring us.

Marvel with Marc

Monday, October 10th, 2011

With two lines to balance with the Marc Jacobs name alone, he always outshines himself each season with his collections! Not only does his line of beautiful women’s fashion clothing this season deliver for the Spring 2012 Ready to Wear, but it blows our minds with his accessories and shoes as well! With his name being tossed around as a potential designer to replace John Galliano for Christian Dior, I cannot imagine who would be best to feed into the coveted creative women’s clothing line!

Perhaps I’m being a little biased with my undying affection for my beloved Marc Jacobs, but I must say the simplicity in which he takes patterns and colors and turns it into something special for women’s clothing takes me back to why I appreciate fashion in the first place. In an uncharacteristic turn, Marc Jacobs’ line began with a burst of neon colors with Jacobs also feeding into the fluorescent frenzy that fashion is slowly drawn towards. I believe that we are all now becoming like flies drawn to the neon lights of the fashion industry…

But Marc Jacobs took women’s fashion clothing to a serene balance between couture and casual with his Spring 2012 Ready to Wear line and matched patterns with textures, stripes and solids, shapes and simplistic sandals to bring about a collection we can all grab pieces from and wear daily. When the Ready to Wear lines come out every year, I can’t help but anticipate just that: they will be ready to wear.

Of course Marc never lets us down. One of my favorite outfits that I will undoubtedly emulate is an orange and navy blue striped long-sleeved shirt tucked into a navy blue pencil skirt with a feminine bundle of ruffles on each side of the hip. Casual women’s clothing can be taken into any direction depending on what is paired with it. Recall Sharon Stone’s Gap turtleneck she wore on the red carpet? How would anyone have known that wasn’t some couture line had she not let us in on her secret? You can take a simple piece of casual wear and throw it together with a piece that is high end for your even line of contemporary clothing. We also have to appreciate how Marc continues to give us more and more ideas for how to wear women’s shoes.  In this collection, whether it be a pair of black women’s sandals and a ruffled skirt, or a red pair of Mary Janes with an orange shirt, Marc shows us how to make it work!
